Nursing is a tough job, but it is also a really compelling career choice that makes for great television shows and movies that are insightful and entertaining. From dramas to comedies, there have been a variety of really great shows on television throughout the years that were based around the lives and workplaces of nurses. Viewers have laughed and cried along with these interesting characters and their storylines, and they continue to look forward to new episodes and new shows that will keep discussing important topics related to this field of work.
Below is a list of just four of the many great television shows that have been centered around nurses and their personal, as well as professional, lives. Continue reading to see if your favorite show is on the list.
Nurse Jackie is a Showtime Original Series, which means that, although you may have heard of it, you can only watch it if you subscribe to the Showtime channel through your cable provider. This show has been on the air since 2009 and it is still going strong. Edie Falco plays the lead role as Jackie Peyton, who is a nurse in New York City’s All Saints’ Hospital emergency room. We get to see her in action as a nurse, dealing with patients, doctors, and fellow nurses, and we also get to see what her personal struggles are as well, making her character very real and relatable.
Scrubs was a comedy that aired from 2001 to 2010 on both NBC and ABC. The entire show was based upon fictional settings, including Sacred Heart teaching hospital, and, of course, fictional characters. The award-winning series took a light-hearted look at what it was like to first intern and then work as a nurse in a hospital environment. Many real nurses loved tuning in to see what hilarious storyline they could relate to next.
Hawthorne is yet another compelling drama series based on the lives of nurses. The show aired on TNT from 2009 to 2011. The show’s main character was portrayed by Jada Pinkett Smith. She played Christina Hawthorne, who was the chief nursing officer at Richmond Trinity Hospital in Richmond, Virginia, but she was later forced to move to James River Hospital. Therefore, real-life nurses who have had to move from one work environment to another were definitely able to relate to the challenges that the character faced as a result of being in a new workplace surrounded by new staff, especially because she always advocated for the patients even when her opinion wasn’t the most popular.
ER was, by far, the most famous of all television shows focused on working in a hospital. It received multiple awards during its time on television from 1994 to 2009. It was the longest-running medical drama ever, and featured realistic scenarios that nurses and other medical professionals could relate to quite easily, from stresses on the job to problems amongst staff members, romantic relationships between staff members, and more.

Emily Maynard has whittled down her prospective fiances to three and will thus eliminate another on tonight’s episode of “The Bachelorette”. Still left in the running are Arie, Sean and Jef, but which is the man who’s holding the key to her heart? Is it sexy Arie? How about sweet Jef? Or it could even be funny hottie Sean. We’ll keep you posted as we learn the news. For now, we’ll be recapping the show live tonight!
Tonight in Curacao, Emily will be able to offer up the Fantasy Suite date cards (from Chris, weirdly enough). It’s not an open invitation for a hookup, despite all of the show’s attempts to make it appear as such.
Emily doesn’t give a Suite card to Arie because she doesn’t trust herself with him. Can you blame her? Dude is hot and passionate. She might have to choose him in the end if she goes through with an overnight visit with him. We’ve all heard the rumors that she chooses Jef Holm as her main man. We’ve even heard reports that Emily has already moved out of her home in Charlotte and it’s up for sale.
Stay tuned for the live recap of the show at 8PM EST!
It’s an all new performance episode of American Idol — and it’s British Week! Tonight, the remaining five competitors will be taking on 60′s British songs as well as British Pop. Last week, we’ve had to bid farewell to raspy voiced contestant Elise Testone in an untimely and shocking elimination. If you’ve missed the show, you can read our full official recap here.
Left in the competition are Phillip Phillips, Jessica Sanchez, Joshua Ledet, Skylar Laine and Hollie Cavanagh. It promises to be a good night as the competition is gearing up to name its eleventh American Idol.
From our sister site, Earsucker, we’ve learned what the top five competitors are singing on tonight’s show. You can read the full song spoilers for the top five at this link.
WILL YOU BE WATCHING? WHO ARE YOU ROOTING FOR TONIGHT?
We’ll be hoping that Phillip gets something awesome to sing — he’s totally our favorite in the competition right now!
It’s Motown Night on Dancing With The Stars and we’re covering the show! We will be bringing you the latest action on who’s dancing what as the show airs tonight on ABC at 8PM EST. Stay tuned.
Tonight’s show will feature performances from Martha Reeves, Smokey Robinson and The Temptations. So stick right here with us as the pros and their celebrities battle it out on the dance floor.
Of course, we’re rooting for Gladys Knight and Tristan MacManus to win the show. Why not? She’s a freakin’ legend and he’s hot. We sure wouldn’t mind some more shirtless action from Maksim Chmerkovskiy and William Levy, however.
We’re pigs, what can we say?
Stay tuned for the LIVE RECAP of the show!
The Final Four danced their hearts out to three separate dances last night on Dancing With The Stars. So it’s really anyone’s guess as to who’s going to the Finals!
Ricki Lake and Derek Hough rose to the top of the leaderboard last night, leaving Rob Kardashian in second place, J.R. Martinez in third and soccer player Hope Solo in fourth place.
Here are the scores:
Hope Solo & Maksim Chmerkovskiy – Paso Doble / Argentine Tango – Points: 49
J.R. Martinez & Karina Smirnoff – Paso Doble / Argentine Tango – Points: 56
Rob Kardashian & Cheryl Burke – Samba / Argentine Tango – Points: 65
Ricki Lake & Derek Hough – Samba / Argentine Tango – Points: 67
Our bets are on Hope Solo and Maksim Chmerkovskiy getting the axe tonight, but it could be up in the air. Perhaps J.R. might want to rest that ankle? He seemed really hurt last night when he danced.
My guess is that J.R. and Ricki are surely going to go all the way! The bottom two is likely going to consist of Rob and Hope…but we’re guessing that Rob is going to be safe.
It’s Sunday night and it’s back to work tomorrow so make it magically! This evening we are introduced to the John Doe in Storybrooke’s hospital on Once Upon A Time — and he just so happens to be Prince Charming in Fairytale World.
Emma talks Mary Margaret into reading to an unidentified coma patient in the hospital; Prince Charming and Snow White meet for the first time.
