American Idol ROCK WEEK Top Four Review, Originals, & Audio

by on May.06, 2009, under articles

On American Idol last night, it was my favorite of all weeks, Rock Week. And who else could mentor such burgeoning rock careers other than the almighty Slash from Velvet Revolver (ex-GnR).

Up first was rocker Adam Lambert belting out Led Zeppelin’s “Whole Lotta Love”. The crowd went crazy, everybody cheered, this was a good thing. But what people fail to realize is that he really did butcher a classic last night.

See the difference? Everyone thinks he rocked it, but that’s probably because they’ve never heard the original.

Next up was Allison Iraheta, who sang Janis Joplin’s “Cry Baby”. No one EVER should attempt Janis Joplin. Bad song choice, kiddo. No offense, I’m sure your voice is just lovely otherwise, but methinks Janis is turning over in her grave as we speak.

See? No comparison. Not even close.

Up next were Kris Allen and Danny Gokey and their version of Styx’s song, “Renegade”. This karaoke version of the song was less than mediocre.

Have a listen:

There are just some songs that are out of your vocal abilities, accept that and move on. This was one of those times.

Kris Allen then took the stage to sing “Come Together” by The Beatles. His voice was so strained, it was unbelievable. He sounded like a mini mediocre Rob Thomas at a karaoke bar. The crowd loved it, but it wasn’t good at all. This is another song that no one really should attempt. Maybe he thought he would get by because the song mentions “Coca Cola”, which is a sponsor of the show.

Danny Gokey took the stage next to murder Aerosmith’s “Dream On” and it was just horrible. This is not looking good for this poor kid. Never take on a song that’s completely and totally out of your vocal range.

Last up, Allison and Adam did their rendition of Foghat’s “Slow Ride”. The judges loved them like a fat kid loves cake, which I didn’t get.

Check out Paula Abdul’s new song here, if you haven’t heard it yet. She’ll be singing that in a live performance on tonight’s show.

Verdict: They should all should be sent packing, they are murderers of beautiful songs and that should be illegal.
